Down Cathedral and Erenagh Excavations: Brian Sloan on Thursday 25 September
Meetings of the Lecale and Downe Historical Society resume after the summer break on Thursday 25 September at 7.30pm in Down County Museum when the guest speaker, Brian Sloan, will deliver a presentation on the recent community archaeological excavations on Cathedral Hill in Downpatrick and at the monastic site of Erenagh. Brian Sloan has worked at the Centre for Community Archaeology at Queen’s University since 2003 and has directed a number of archaeological investigations in counties Down and Tyrone. He also has a keen interest in experimental archaeology and has developed skills in both flint knapping and blacksmithing.
The excavations at Cathedral Hill and Erenagh were important in helping to develop a greater understanding of the medieval history of Lecale. Brian Sloan’s talk promises to reveal interesting stories about the dig and its discoveries, as well as a few surprises.
The talk is free to members of the Lecale and Downe Historical Society. Entry for visitors is £5 and this includes tea or coffee and biscuits on arrival.
The Lecale and Downe Historical Society welcomes new and returning members. The cost of annual membership is £15 (£20 for joint membership), which guarantees free entry to Society lectures and a copy of the annual publication Lecale Review, which will be launched on 23 October.
