Next Talk: The Experiences of Millisle Farm Refugees by Shirley Lennon, 26 February at 7.30pm
The next meeting of the Lecale & Downe Historical Society will take place on Thursday 26 February at 7.30pm in Down County Museum. The guest speaker will be Shirley Lennon whose talk is entitled ‘A Reflection on the 80 Candles for 80 Years Project: the Experiences of Edith and Gert Jacobowitz; Millisle Farm Refugees.’ During 2025 Shirley worked with her local Presbyterian Women’s group on a research and craft project to mark 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. Her illustrated talk will focus on this project and how it reflected the experiences of some refugees who passed through a farm in Millisle. The special candleholder created as part of the project will be on display.
Shirley Lennon lives in Downpatrick and has worked in education, for the National Trust, and in Down County Museum. Her interest in Holocaust education developed while working as Northern Ireland Support Worker for the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for several years in a part time role.
The talk is free for members of the Lecale & Downe Historical Society and guests are most welcome (entry is £5 and includes tea/coffee).
