Treasure Island, Arrrrrr: Talk by Dr Greer Ramsey 26 March
The next meeting of the Lecale & Downe Historical Society is on Thursday 26 March at 7.30pm in Down County Museum when the guest speaker will be Dr Greer Ramsey, Curator of Archaeology for National Museums NI. Dr Ramsey's talk is entitled Treasure Island, Arrr!: Archaeology and the Treasure Act.
The Ulster Museum has the responsibility for overseeing items deemed to be Treasure by the Coroner for Northern Ireland. Dr Ramsey’s illustrated talk explores the 1996 Treasure Act using an array of fascinating objects acquired by the Museum as a result of this legislation. These range from Bronze Age gold jewellery and Viking silver to religious items and coin hoards.
Greer Ramsey studied Archaeology at Queen’s University, completing a Ph.D on Bronze Age metalwork. He worked at both Enniskillen and Armagh County Museums before taking up his current role.
The talk is free for members of the Lecale & Downe Historical Society. Guests are most welcome (entry is £5 and includes tea/coffee).
The Lecale & Downe Historical Society hopes to raise funds by selling donated non-fiction books on local history, historical biography and general history. Past copies of Lecale Review and/or Lecale Miscellany - always in demand - will be available for sale at meetings.
