Ulster History Circle Blue Plaque for William Sharman Crawford (1780-1861)

1st Mar 2026

On Thursday 26 February 2026 the Ulster History Circle unveiled a Blue Plaque to mark the significance of William Sharman Crawford; benevolent landowner, radical MP and 'the father of Tenant Right.' Crawford owned the Rademon Estate in Crossgar and also the large estate in Crawfordsburn. He was interred in the family mausoleum at Kilmore.

In January 2025 Professor Peter Gray from the Institute of Irish Studies in Queen's University Belfast gave a wonderful talk on Sharman Crawford to the Lecale & Downe Historical Society. As the author of an award winning biography on this important historical figure, Professor Gray performed the unveiling in Crawfordsburn. The plaque can be seen on the front of the Old Inn, Crawfordsburn.
